Start with who pays whom
To compare rental protection, ask two questions: what can the supplier charge you after an incident, and can another policy reimburse that charge? These are separate contractual relationships. A reassuring product name does not explain either one.
Third-party liability concerns injury or damage caused to others. A collision damage waiver, usually called CDW, limits the renter's liability for specified damage to the hired vehicle under the agreement. Theft protection addresses a different risk. Read the actual terms for each product instead of treating them as interchangeable.
Excess is not the deposit
The excess is the amount you may remain liable for on a covered claim. The deposit is money blocked or taken as security. Their values can differ. Reducing an excess may leave a deposit for fuel, equipment or other obligations, so obtain both figures.
Hertz Cyprus's terms illustrate how cover and liability differ between vehicle groups and protection options. Its restrictions also show why the headline excess is not a ceiling for every possible loss. Read the deposit guide alongside the policy wording.
Check exclusions before buying more cover
Ask separately about glass, wheels, tyres, roof, underbody, keys, misfuelling, interior damage and towing. The answer depends on the product. A package covering a damaged tyre does not necessarily pay for a replacement wheel or roadside attendance.
Also examine conduct and permitted-use conditions: authorised drivers, timely reporting, prohibited roads, alcohol or drug use and territorial restrictions. A waiver can be conditional on compliance with the agreement. Do not assume a zero-excess label removes excluded damage or recovery costs.

Supplier waiver or separate reimbursement?
A supplier's upgraded waiver changes what that supplier can charge under the rental contract. A separate reimbursement product may require you to pay the supplier first and submit a claim with supporting documents. Verify this in the policy you are considering; do not assume all comparison-platform products operate identically.
Ask about maximum reimbursement, deadlines, required reports, excluded fees and eligible drivers. If you already have travel or card-based rental cover, check the vehicle category, trip length and territory before relying on it. Overlapping policies do not guarantee that every gap is covered.
A monthly rental still has conditions
Hertz Flex Drive advertises damage and theft protection with a deductible. Included insurance therefore does not mean no financial exposure. On a long rental, request the same written excess and exclusion information you would ask for on a holiday booking.
For a journey across the Green Line, establish contract permission, territorial liability cover, own-damage/theft cover and recovery separately. Buying a policy at a crossing cannot rewrite the supplier's rental agreement.
Keep the evidence needed for a claim
Record the car's condition at collection and return. If an incident occurs, first make the situation safe, then contact emergency services when needed and follow the supplier's and insurer's reporting instructions. Keep photographs, reports, invoices and correspondence. Do not arrange a repair or accept a settlement without checking the contract's approval requirements.
Use the general insurance guide for privately owned cars and the rental guide to compare the total booking. Choose protection by the liability it changes and the risks it leaves with you.
