What the law means for a family rental

For ordinary passenger cars equipped with safety systems, Cyprus's Road Safety Law provides for children below 150 cm to use an appropriate child restraint. A rear-facing restraint must not be used in front of an active frontal airbag. Special vehicle and exemption provisions are not a general shortcut for a family rental.

Choose the restraint from the child's measurements and its approved instructions. The Consumer Protection Service advises checking vehicle compatibility and suitability for the child's height, weight and age. A supplier's label such as baby seat does not answer those questions.

Reserve a specific requirement

Send the supplier each child's age, height and weight and ask what seat it can actually provide. Get confirmation in writing for your dates and branch. A ticked extras box may be a request rather than guaranteed stock. Ask about the replacement plan if the reserved restraint is unavailable or unsuitable.

For example, Hertz Cyprus lists child seats as available on request. This is a provider policy, not a rule that every rental includes a seat. Confirm the final charge and availability in your own offer.

Ask who supplies the instructions, who fits the seat and what assistance is available at handover. Even when staff help, check the installation against the seat and vehicle manuals. Do not set off with a damaged seat, missing components or an arrangement you cannot establish is suitable.

Seats and suitcases compete for space

Count the restraints, adults, folded pushchair and bags together. A five-seat category does not prove that three restraints fit across its rear row. Ask about the actual seating layout, permitted anchorage positions and usable boot space. Avoid relying on the model photograph when the booking allows a similar vehicle.

If you bring your own seat, check its compatibility before departure and inspect it after transport. Airline baggage allowances and packaging requirements differ, so confirm them with your airline. An airport transfer also needs its own child-seat arrangement; do not assume the rental booking covers it.

Questions to send the rental company

  • Can you confirm a suitable seat for each child's measurements and our collection time?
  • Which seat model or approved size range will be supplied, and is availability guaranteed?
  • Is it compatible with the booked vehicle category and the other restraints we need?
  • Who fits it, and will the instructions and all required components be available?
  • What is the total equipment charge, and what happens if the seat is unsuitable?
  • Does collection involve a shuttle, and how will the children travel in that vehicle?

Pack for a calm handover

Keep the reservation, licences, payment card, seat instructions, essential medicines, water and a change of clothes accessible. Keep one adult free to supervise children away from moving vehicles while the other checks the agreement and car. Never leave a child unattended in the vehicle.

Use the collection checklist for the vehicle inspection and the rental guide for booking conditions. Check Larnaca Airport collection or Paphos Airport collection for the arrival plan. The road rules guide covers the wider driving requirements.
