Make transmission a booking condition
If you need an automatic, select it in the search and make sure the reservation confirms it. A photograph of a familiar model is insufficient because fleets can contain different versions. Ask the supplier what happens if the booked transmission category is unavailable at collection.
An automatic can simplify an unfamiliar drive by removing manual gear changes. It does not change traffic direction, road priority or the need to learn the car's controls. Visit Cyprus confirms left-side traffic and kilometre-based road signs; prepare for that before leaving the parking area.
Category versus exact model
Comparison websites such as DiscoverCars let you compare offers for your dates. Treat the displayed vehicle as a category example unless the written offer guarantees a model. Transmission, seats, doors and luggage capacity are useful comparison fields, but confirm any feature essential to your trip.
If you have an automatic-only licence, tell the supplier before booking and ask it to confirm an eligible vehicle. Do not accept a manual substitute that your licence does not allow you to drive.
Choose for the trip you will actually take
For a couple with cabin bags, a compact car may be sufficient. For several adults, large suitcases or child seats, check usable space rather than relying on the category name. Ask whether a stroller fits with the rear seats in use. These are planning examples, not guarantees about a particular model.
For steep hotel access or a narrow parking entrance, ask about vehicle dimensions and clearance. An SUV-style appearance does not establish permission to use unpaved roads. If considering an electric automatic, first confirm charging arrangements and the supplier's return-charge requirement.
Compare the complete automatic offer
Repeat the same dates, driver age and pickup point when comparing prices. Check mileage, fuel policy, protection, airport charges and cancellation. The Hertz terms illustrate that deposits and age conditions vary by vehicle group; an automatic category need not have the same conditions as the lowest-priced car.
Check the card requirements before paying. There is no useful permanent claim that automatics cost a particular percentage more: the relevant amount is the final price for your dates and category.
Learn the controls while parked
Ask staff to explain the selector, parking brake, reverse selection, lights and driver-assistance settings. Check how to restart the car after an automatic stop and how the key must be carried. Set the seat and mirrors before moving. If a control or warning is unclear, resolve it at the desk instead of experimenting in traffic.
Keep your first journey straightforward and allow time to settle into driving on the left. Use the Larnaca or Paphos guide for collection details and the main rental guide for the handover checklist.
